Scotwest Credit Union Timeline

Scotwest Credit Union turned 25 in 2016!

Scotwest Credit Union began life in 1991 as Strathclyde Regional Council Employees Credit Union Ltd, meeting weekly in Strathclyde House in Glasgow city centre, considering loan applications up to £100 and managing savings for staff from the council and from Strathclyde Fire Brigade and Strathclyde Water Board.

Quickly outgrowing these humble beginnings and having changed our name to Scotwest Credit Union, we became the credit union for the 12 local authorities which replaced Strathclyde Regional Council in 1995 we soon moved to offices only a stone’s throw away from the location of those initial meetings.

Offering savings accounts, loans and mortgages to anyone living or working across the West of Scotland, membership has now grown to almost 30,000 (including over 900 members who have been with us since our first year) making us one of the biggest Credit Unions in the UK.

Along the way Scotwest helped change the way Credit Unions worked in the UK, becoming the first to offer online banking, as well as the first to offer everyone across the country aged between 16 and 25 access to an online credit union. We have continued to grow, introducing new services and benefits including car loans and a mobile banking app in the last year alone.

Scotwest was built on the spirit of ‘people helping people’ and even now, as one of the biggest credit unions in the UK, we still focus on dealing with our members on a one to one, individual basis.

Look out for announcements of celebratory activities and competitions throughout the year on these pages, through our regular eNewsletters and on our social media pages.
